Victorian 'Problem Pictures' - Simon Evers

Problem Pictures is the name given to a genre of painting which was very popular in the second half of the 19^th century. They are defined as ‘paintings which are either a deliberately ambiguous depiction of a key moment in a narrative or a portrayal of an unresolved dilemma’. The viewer of the picture is invited to speculate about several different possible explanations of the scene.
